Seeking information on Peter Louis Venn and Minnie Elizabeth Venn

published by Erik Aasland on Thu, 14/06/2012 - 16:54

Hello,

I am trying to find out any possible information on my great-grandfather who I believe retired in Weston-Super-Mare.

Peter Louis Venn worked for 40 years in the Post Office in Maidenhead in Berkshire. In 1925 he retired, probably moving to Weston-Super Mare shortly afterwards. He passed away there on March 14, 1932, at 79 Sunnyside Road. His wife, Minnie Elizabeth Venn (nee Smith), remained in Weston-Super-Mare, passing away at 46 Severn Road on October 28, 1955.

Minnie Elizabeth Venn had a daughter from a previous marriage, Minnie May Robertson, who must have likely inherited the house at 46 Severn Road, as Minnie May Robertson passed away in Weston-Super-Mare on July 26, 1967.

I was wondering if anyone would know how I would go about finding out if these three individuals are buried in the local cemetery, which I think is the Milton Road Cemetery. Actually, any information on these individuals and their lives in Weston-Super-Mare would be gratefully appreciated.

Thank you so much.

Peter Louis Venn and Minnie Elizabeth Ven

The Milton Road cemetery 'register of burials' has the following entry for Peter Louis Venn. Entry No 16507, retired civil servant, Aged 66, Place of death 79 Sunnyside Road WsM, Date of burial 17 March 1932. Grave No 145.

There does not appear to be a burial entry for his wife Minnie. Could she have been buried with her first husband?

Hi Graham,

Thank you so much for confirming that my great-grandfather is buried in the Milton Road Cemetery, that's just great. You could be quite right about Minnie Elizabeth Venn (first marriage to James Robertson, 1850-1898, who died on Oct 27, 1898 in Aberdeen, Scotland), she might have well been buried with James Robertson. Her daughter with James, Minnie May Robertson, also died in Weston-Super-Mare (on Jul 26, 1967). Minnie May never married so if her mum was buried with her first husband, maybe Minnie May chose to be buried with her parents. I'll have to look into their buriels a little closer.

It was very nice to have it confirmed that Peter Louis Venn was buried in the Milton Road Cemetery, my mum always wondered about where he was buried. My next step is to try to figure out if possible when exactly he moved from Maidenhead to Weston-Super-Mare. I assume that it must have been shortly after he retired in 1925.

Thank you again!

Erik

Peter Louis VENN & Minnie Elizabeth VENN

From our CD of information about Milton Road Cemetery it appears that although Peter VENN was buried, as Graham told you, on the 17th March 1932, in Plot X Grave no.145, there is no memorial stone and no one else is buried in the grave.

To find out when he moved to Weston you could apply to the Library in Weston where there are Street Directories and ask the librarians when he first appeared at 79 Sunnyside Road.  This service is without charge.

It is likely that 79 Sunnyside Road was newly built in about 1926/27 - The Somerset Heritage Centre in Taunton holds building plans for Weston-super-Mare.  If you put the name of the road into their online catalogue you can see examples of the development which was taking place.  If you haven't already done so you can also see the house on Google Street view.

I note, from another street directory, that by 1941 his widow was already at "Seabank", 46 Severn Road. This is a slightly older property but still in existance today.

Did you know that there are Venn's living in Uphill?

Hi Shirley,

Thank you. I didn't know that, in fact, I'm in Ottawa, Canada so I'm not even familiar with Uphill. I doubt however that those Venns would be related as I've tracked down all the descendants of Peter Louis Venn.

Thank you again.

Erik
