Hi,

Just wondering if anyone knows how to find out what happened to the remains of those who died at West End House, Shepton Mallet during the mid-1950s? In particular, I'm trying to establish what happened to the body of Fanny Laura Bennett who died there on 3rd June 1955 and am wondering if she might have received a pauper burial. Any ideas?

Thanks,

AndyT

West End House was the name give to Shepton Mallet Workhouse in 1904 and when the Workhouse closed in 1930 the building became West End House used as a Home for female "Mental Defectives".  It later became Norah Fry Hospital.  As many of its records are in the Someret Archives you might find they have some information about burials of patients in 1955.  I'm not sure whether it had its own burial ground.

Pat - many thanks for the information and your suggestion. Last night, I e-mailed the South West Heritage Trust and submitted a research request - fingers crossed.
