The Society, which was founded in 1983 by a few dedicated Family History class students, has grown into an active membership in excess of two hundred. The area covered by the Society is Weston-super-Mare and the surrounding parishes, which make up North Somerset and also includes parishes from the Registration District of Axbridge.
Meetings are held on the 4th Tuesday of the month, except August and December, at The Vintage Church, Hughenden Road Weston-super-Mare, BS23 2UR. The venue is open from 19.00 for people to discuss their research, view our Library of books which can be borrowed and also the Exchange Journals which are normally available. There is a small charge which includes refreshments. The meeting commences at 7.30pm. New members and visitors are always welcome.
Visits are arranged to London repositories, and members endeavour to help those from other areas on a reciprocal basis. The Society exists to help members to help themselves and with this in mind publishes a magazine on a regular basis. This website is maintained and regularly updated and is where members can list their interests without charge. Transcriptions of a number of parish registers and cemetery records are available too from the site
The Society tries to encourage and stimulate interest in family history generally and has a very positive link with Weston-super-Mare Library, which has excellent resources and facilities. On every Saturday of each month volunteers from the membership are in the Library from 2.00pm until 3.30pm to help anyone who wants to start searching for their ancestors or has a problem with their research. Monthly Help Sessions are also held in Portishead, Worle, and at the Healthy Living Centre in Weston.
