Robert Hardcastle Johnston 1818-1902 (born Ireland)
published by on Thu, 10/05/2012 - 9:38

I have been researching my grt grandfather for a number of years, and am very grateful for the help I have had from this forum.  I have his birth and death details, he is buried in WSM and at one time kept a 'lodging house' at 3 Royal Terrace, now sadley part of Wetherspoons !   I was just wondering if there was any record that he kept any other establishments in WSM as there was some mention in the family that there was a connection with what is now Daunceys.  If anyone has any info, much appreciated.

Thanks you  J

I am trying to find the baptism of Arthur Coles, my 5x Great Grandfather.  I know he married Betty MILLARD in St Martin's Church in Worle on 7th May 1765 and I believe was buried in St Paul's Church in Kewstoke on 5th March 1781.  Can anyone help?

Who was Anna Maria HARSE and what became of her?
published by DebbieD on Thu, 12/04/2012 - 20:29

Anna Maria HARSE was in Axbridge Union Workhouse in 1851 aged 2.  With her are Hannah HARSE aged 41 and Joseph HARSE aged 11.  Joseph and Anna's place of birth is given as Weare and Hannah's is given as South Brent.

I am pretty certain that Hannah (nee ATWELL) was baptised in Weare, Somerset on 3 Dec 1809 and that she married a Joseph HARSE/HEARSE in Bristol in 1835.  Their son Joseph was born in Newport, Mon in 1839 and the family were there in 1841.

The HURSE family were living in Nailsea, Somerset when another son Thomas was born in 1847.  Joseph HARSE Snr died at Pill, Somerset in September 1849 followed by his son Thomas in the October .  The informant for both was Emma HARSE who was present at the deaths and I now know her to be Joseph's adult daughter from a previous marriage.

There is a likely sighting of Anna Maria in 1861 in Hopkins Street, Weston-super-Mare.  Anne HARSE is 11 years old, born Pill, Somerset and a boarder with the Fisher family.  Hannah is remarried to William HARES and is also living in Hopkins Street with a lodger Joseph HURST aged 18 who was born in Newport, Mon.

Interest in Sparey families, Congresbury/Yatton
published by on Thu, 12/04/2012 - 13:15

The census records show many Sparey or Spary families in Congresbury and Yatton from 1840 through 1910. One of particular interest stayed at the Spotted Horse Inn, Congresbury. Does this inn still exist? Where was it located?

Any relevant links would be appreciated. Thanks. Staan

Tutt/ Battle/ Vickary
published by on Sat, 07/04/2012 - 5:33

Hi,

I live in Brisbane Australia, and am descended from William Tutt (b.1816 Nth somerset, son of Richard Tutt and Mary nee Vickary) and his wife Sarah nee Battle ( b 1816. Nth SOmerset, daughter of Arthur Battle) , who were married in Winscombe in Axbridge, and lived in Banwell/Puxton in 1841. They are my Gt Gt Gt Grandparents. They had 2 children Elizabeth (b 1840 in Winscombe) and Jane (b. 1842 in WInscombe). I am descended through Elizabeth. They emigrated to Australia in 1844 aboard the William Metcalfe, and had 5 more children in Sydney. They joined William's older brother James Tutt in Sydney who was transported as a convict in 1838.

I am looking for more information about the ancestry of these two ie the Tutt/ Vickary or Battle lines.

Any information would be appreciated. My email address is rbaspinall@gmail.com

thanks

Ben Aspinall

Burials on the sands at Brean
published by Pat Hase on Sun, 01/04/2012 - 22:06

I've had a query about the practice of burying bodies which have been washed up on the shore in the sands above the high water line at Brean.  I see that in the preface to the transcritions of Brean Burial Registers we have said that it was common practice at one time.  I also note that some bodies of unknown drowned sailors were buried in unconsecrated ground near the church because they did not know their religious beliefs. Does anyone know whether this was a local custom or was it done elsewhere?
