I have received a query from a non-member who is researching the HARSE family of Weston-super-Mare. She has a family tree from Brian Austin, but would like to make contact with anyone else who is interested in this family. She wants to establish how her family is connected to the John HARSE, 1787-1874, who initiated a carrier service in 1811 between Weston and Bristol and later lived for a while of Steep Holm.
Her own family includes a John & Hannah HARSE who were living in Rose Cottage, Carlton Street, Weston-super-Mare in 1851. They were married at St John's Church, Weston, 24th April 1823. Hannah's maiden name appears to be CARP and there was a query about that surname connected with the FRY family earlier.
This picture is of George HARSE, 1819-1861, the Weston Worthy, who was a Donkeychairman and a nephew of the John & Hannah of Carlton Street.
I've just had a request for help in researching Simon PALMER who was born in about 1807 and became a shoemaker, besides being the parish clerk to Kewstoke.
His son, Joseph, became the Vicar of Priddy and oversaw the rebuild of the Parish Church.
Can anyone help? I will put you in touch with the person who is interested in finding out more about Simon PALMER.
When Edward FRY married Ann COX at ST Martin's Church in Worle in 1843 his father's name was given as George CARP.
It is possible that Edward FRY was the illegitimate son of a Susannah FRY from Kewstoke - but there are TWO people called Susannah FRY about at that time. Can anyone help sort this out - and who was George CARP?
This book has just been published by the Somerset Archaeological & Natural History Society covering original research into aspects of the maritime history of the ancient county of Somerset.
It contains a section written by Weston FHS Life Member, Brian Austin, entitled The Effect of the Tide on the Social History of Weston-Super-Mare. This provides useful background information for all of us who have ancestors from North Somerset.
