SLADE in SOMERSET/LYMPSHAM
published by on Wed, 12/09/2018 - 14:56
Hello --

My name is Bill Carroll and I live in Charlotte, NC, USA. My great-grandparents, Francis and Florence SLADE, lived in the Lympsham area in the latter half of the 19th century. Francis was had 21 siblings and was the son of Edward and Amelia Slade. I have located a few records of some of Edward and Amelia's other children, but not much. Any help or other connections would be appreciated.

Thank you --

Hi Bill

It would be helpful if you could give a rough date to go on as the latter half of the 19th century is a lot to search

All the very best

Hi Bill

Ive been searching the parish registers for Lympsham & have found a few Slade's for ytu
24MAR1878 Arthur s/o Edward/Amelia SLADE p41 no323
25DEC1881 Richard s/o " / " " p47 no374
25DEC1881 Frances s/o " / " " p47 no373 there is nothing in the registers to say these are twins so I would imagine one was baptised late
29APR1883 Fred Pointer twin s/o Edward/Amelia SLADE p49 no392
29APR1883 Walter Porter twin s/o " / " " p50 no393
3JUL1896 Clifford John s/o " / " " p55 no436
27NOV1887 Advent Sunday Ada Amelia d/o Edward/Amelia SLADE p56 no 448
I think this is the lot at Lympsham for this couple as I went on searching till I got to 1913

All the very best

Phil

Ps the source for these baptisms is the image of the actual parish registers for Lympsham

If you are a full member of our society you would have access to all the parish transcriptions and I would recommend you look not only at Lympsham but also at Hutton and possibly other neighbouring parishes.  Look for baptisms and burials.  How do you know that there were 22 children born to Edward and Amelia?  You could also use the GRO Index to locate their births using the Amelia's maiden name of PORTER to eliminate other SLADE births in the Axbridge Registration district after 1862.

Good Luck with researching the SLADE family!

Hi Bill,

I think you have included another family in your 21 siblings for Francis.  I have found 17 children altogether with 4 dying very young.  I have not gone into the baptism and burial transcriptios as someone has suggested so I may have missed one.

The whole family is very well documented on Ancestry with photos of gravestones and I am sure also in the Hutton and Lympsham PRs on this site.

Unfortunately, the 1911 census doesn't give the exact number of live births to Amelia which is a shame as there are several marriages that are a Slade - Porter combination.  If you can follow the instructions on the post above, you will find all you need but if you have trouble doing that, I am happy to list out the information I have found. (very easily)

Edward Slade married Amelia Porter 18th June 1862 at St Philip and St Jacob, Bristol  ref 2nd qtr 1862 Bristol vol 6a page 100

Hi Bill

Out of curiosity where did you get the info that the family your looking for at Lympsham had 22 children & if there were 22 I wonder where the rest were baptised

All the very best

Phil

ps after putting this on I decided to search images of Lympsham parish registers & have put all I can find there on these FHS pages

Hi Phil,

It seems that Bill does not visit this site very often as he has not responded to any of the comments in reply to his enquiry of the 9th December.
