George H BRYANT Nailsea
published by on Mon, 07/01/2019 - 21:52

Hello, Please may I ask for some help as I am stuck. My great grandfather George H Bryant (1880) married Gladys Hooper (1904) in 1928 and they lived in Nailsea until his death in 1945. Before 1928 he was married with two children, a boy named George and a daughter who died after announcing her engagement. Based on his wedding certificate to Gladys he lived in Nailsea however I don't know who he was married to or the name of his daughter. Any help would be greatly appreciated as I am stuck! I don't know where he was born-I have tried many searches! I only have limited information from my mother filling in the gaps. Thank you for any help you can offer!! Best wishes, Julie

I see your problem! I'm assuming his first wife died but there are no deaths of a woman surname BRYANT in the Long Ashton Registration District (for Nailsea) between 1900 and 1928 of  a  suitable age.  When did his daughter die?  Would that have been after he married Gladys?  Do you know what happened to his son George?

If the date of birth given for George on the 1939 Register is Correct - 31st August 1880 - that narrows down the possibilities for his birth place, none of which appear to be in Somerset.

Hi Pat, thank you ever so much for your prompt response. Unfortunately I only have limited information from my mum and one photograph. I know that George was definitely widowed when he married Gladys, it appears that they were neighbours before they married (based on the marriage certificate). I don't know George's daughters name all I know is that she died at about 17/18 after falling off her bike just after becoming engaged. My mum cant remember her name as her mother only rarely discussed her. I know George died after 1981 in Ramsgate however I have not been able to determine with any certainty when he died. It is all really frustrating! Thank you again for your help!

I expect you have seen the couple of trees on Ancestry about this family.  One has incorrectly included an Army Record for a George  BRYANT stating that he died in Burma in 1945.  One has included a second name of Harvey for him - but one seems to have the same information as you have - are you in communication with her? Unless it is you under another name?  It's the  O'Rourke - Ludlow Family Tree run by a "mrsludlow".

You might want to eliminate the George Henry BRYANT (born 1880) who married a Mary Ann ADAMS in Bristol in 1904.  A Mary Ann BRYANT died in 1927 in Bristol, aged 44.   They appear to have had a son called George W BRYANT in 1918 also registered in Bristol. But they also had more than one daughter.

This might be a coincidence but a George W BRYANT married a Joan D E MAXTED (not Margaret) in 1945 in the registration district of Thanet (which includes Ramsgate) and they had a daughter, Susan in 1952. (names similar to those mentioned on the Ancestry tree).  I'm now into the realms of fantasy!!  A lot more checking to do.

I'm delighted for you and hope that if you can make contact again with Susan, who may know the answers to your questions.  However, please remember in your excitment that it would not be good practice to write anything online about living people without their expressed permission!

It looks as if your perseverance is paying off. - Good Luck with your research - perhaps his first wife might have been Mary Ann ADAMS after all?

I have been researching my Bryant family for many years. We probably have a common ancestor. My earliest certain ancestor is Issac Bryant (born 1809, died at the work house Long Ashton 1881) who was a blacksmith in Tickenham - south of Nailsea. One of 8 children some called Briant. His possible parents were John Bryant and Sarah Hopkins married 9 May 1791 in Nailsea. I think they worked in coal mining in Nailsea. Hope this is useful. Happy to discuss further. Paul Bryant.

Dear Paul,

It would be great if we were related! I am going to keep looking and I will try the Bryant name variation as well. Thank you for sharing the information you have to date. I will start searching and I will keep you updated- it would be exciting to find a long lost cousin. Good luck with your researching!!

Glad to see the society is holding a meeting on the Great Storm of 1903. My grandfather Edgar Bryant was drowned in the storm with his body washed up at Tenby. Now in Milton Cemetery.

From the GRO death index, I see that his middle name was Henry and that he was 63 when he died in 1945. There is only 1 George Henry Bryant in the birth index 1880-1882 Q3 1882 Newbury 2c 229 Mother’s maiden name Pearce.
Census records for him

George Henry Bryant, age 8, born Newbury, son of George & Levina Bryant living at Blue Ball Yd, Greenham
1901 Census Class: RG13; Piece: 1121; Folio: 42; Page: 7
George Henry Bryant, age 18, born Newbury, Draper’s Porter, grandson of Charles Pearce
living at 3 Blue Ball Cottages, Greenham, next door to parents at no.4
1911 Census Class: RG14; Piece: 34971; Page: 18
George Bryant, age 27, married, born Newbury, Leading Stoker, in Vessels in miscellaneous locations in the Royal Navy
Not got any further with finding his marriage yet, but hope that might help
Dave
