Payne Family published by JulieAPayne on Sat, 24/07/2021 - 15:07
I am making a last attempt to find the birthplace of my x4 great grandfather John Payne born about 1774. He married Hannah Sarah Bailey in Bleadon in July 1798. Hannah was from the Parish but the record states he was from Blagdon Parish.
He married again in 1808, as a widower of Bleadon, to Mary Petheram.
Having searched all the Blagdon and nearby Parish records, I have not been able to match him with any likely parents.
He had two sets of children from his marriages so wondered if any of this information sounds familiar to other Members with Pain/Payne ancestors from Bleadon or Uphill.
I'm not sure that this will help, but I noted that at the same time as one of John's children was christened a William & Sarah PAYNE also had a child christened and that a William PAIN [sic] witnessed his second marriage. Perhaps he was a brother? When William married in Compton Bishop to Sarah BATHE he was said to have been "of Bleadon". William appears to have died in 1835, aged 70 which suggest a birth in about 1765.

Many thanks Pat. That information did ring a bell so I looked back at my notes and saw that I had noted a couple baptisms with a William Pain, which show he was baptising his children before John was married so maybe he was an older brother. I'm now searching more parishes to see if the two of them were baptised with the same parents.
