Find Elizabeth HODGES
published by Brian & Pam Airey on Thu, 28/07/2022 - 19:31

We have Elizabeth HODGES born 1861 in Donyatt, and have traced her as far as 1891 census in Lewisham, when she was a housemaid. Nothing more was found about her until 1939 register when she is living in Ilminster with other members of her family.

We then receive an email from a relative in Australia stating he is in possession of a clock inscribed "Elizbeth Hodges from Mr & Mrs HOWARTH, The Ferns,Beckenham August 1908"

We assume this was presented to her for long service or some such but can not find any more details. Neither Elizabeth nor HOWARTHs have been found in 1901 or 1911 censuses.

Any thoughts please

On the 1911 Census a William Henry HAWORTH, a Bank manager, aged 61, is living at The Ferns, Beckenham Kent, with his wife, Emma (who he married in 1901) and three servants.  Seems a likely candidate.  The actual address is 5 Copers Cope Road.

Thanks Pat, I don't know why we could not find W H HAWORTH in 1911 so well done. As the clock was given to Elizabeth 1908 she had obviously moved from them.

Thanks to "Zumrob" She appears to be visiting William & Mary Rose in 1911 as a domestic parlourmaid from Ilminster. In 1891 Elizabeth was a parlourmaid working in the same house as an Emily Weller another servant. Mary Rose's maiden name was Weller, both she and Mary born Lewisham, so we assume a connection there. Still can't find Elizabeth in 1901

Here she is ... born 1869! Servant in West Wickham, Bromley, Kent

Look who is also there - Emily WELLER!

Think the birth date of 1869 and place of birth = Broadway made the 1901 more difficult.

William Henry appears to have died in 1921 so she must have worked for them before then.

On the 1911 census Elizabeth Hodges ... visiting Abraham & Mary ROSE in 137 Ravenscroft Road, Beckenham, Kent. Birth indicates born in 1867! (not 1861)  but she is a Domestic Parlour maid from Ilminster.

1921 - She might still be there! There are 3 entries for 137 Ravenscroft Road. 1 for Abraham and Mary. 1 for Alfred, Kate and Percival. 1 for Elizabeth!

You can find this out by doing a free lookup on Findmypast.

In 1901 there is a Bessie Hodges b 1868 Ilminster working for the Right Hon. Victor Albert Francis Charles CHURCHILL at Rolleston Hall in Leicestershire. There does seem to be a Bessie M HODGES b 1867 living in Donyat in the 1871 census as well as an Elizabeth HODGES b 1861, Ilminster daughter of Job HODGES. Not sure which one is yours.

Thank you for that.

Why we could not find Elizabeth in 1911 we don't know!

As far as the 1921 census is concerned all we can find for 137 Ravenscroft Rd is Abraham & Mary. How did you find the others?

The Bessie Hodges is not part of the family we are researching but thanks. Elizabeth was the daughter of Job.

Shame about Bessie - that would have been quite cool!

As for the 1921 census - do an address search rather than a person one.

3 entries are displayed for No. 137 (see image). The 3rd one is for someone called Elizabeth - I have not checked what Elizabeth!

Good Luck with the rest, Rob
