I have just found baptism 13 Oct 1843 in Preston of a John Charles WORTHINGTON son of Richard & Mary, father a farmer. John is in 1851 census with rest of family so am happier with info originally posted

The tithe map of Rufford, Preston, Lancashire dated 1839 shows a Richard Worthington occupying about 8 acres of land so I guess he had a dual occupation. 

The Genealogist has this entry:

Note that it also includes a Public House! - it was the Hesketh Arms, named after the owner of the land.
