Research by a professional genealogist that has recently been sent to me suggests that Henry Pettie was originally from a family Petty in Cheltenham, and changed the spelling of his name before or at the time of his marriage to Jane Ritchie. Perhaps this was to make it seem Scottish, and to help prevent discovery that he was (according to the research) already married to another woman.
