Charlotte MARSHALL nee WOODBURN 1811-1887
published by Pat Hase on Fri, 03/05/2019 - 18:55

Although this is a little outside of this area I need some help to sort out the WOODBURN (and variants) who lived in Wells, Somerset.

Charlotte WOODBURN married John MARSHALL on Christmas Eve in 1835 in Shepton Mallet.  The marriage was witnessed by a Charles MARSHALL who I believe was John's brother. Their father, Jesse MARSHALL, was born in Winscombe.

John & Charlotte MARSHALL were my husband's gg grandparents and when their son Frederick was born in 1838 the informant was a Ann CARDWELL who was described as "aunt of the child, present at the birth"

There is a marriage in 1828 at St Cuthbert's Church in Wells of an Ann WOODBURN to a Joseph CARDWELL, which suggests that Ann and Charlotte WOODBURN might be sisters.  Later census entries give birth dates of  Ann about 1807, and Charlotte about 1811.  I haven't found a christening of an Ann WOODBURN but a Charlotte WOODBURN was christened at St Cuthbert's Church in June 1811, the daughter of Mary WOODBURN of East Wells.

There are three more christenings of daughters of a Mary WOODBURN at St Cuthbert's - Jane in 1813, Caroline in 1814 and Mary Anne in 1816.  Is this the same Mary WOODBURN who married William CLARK in St Cuthbert's in 1819 and was he the father of her children?

I look forward to your suggestions

Glentworth Hall
published by R R Champion on Thu, 02/05/2019 - 10:51

I have found a telegram dated May 1940 from Glentworth Hall, I am thinking this is or was a hotel in Weston S Mare, would any body know as to where it is, or even still about, I also have a story written by an ancestor as though he is looking out at the sea, he then gets picked up and taken to Banwell Church.  I am trying now to put the two together and then go to Weston to take some photos and put the two together.  Many Thanks for any help.

Wadham Street Baptist Weddings - Update
published by Pat Hase on Mon, 29/04/2019 - 12:20

Thank you to those who have sent information about weddings which took place at Wadham Street Baptist Church, Weston-super-Mare.  I am attaching the list as it stands at the moment.  If you have any more weddings to add I should be delighted to receive them or if you can see any errors in my transcriptions please let me know.

I have only extracted the newspaper items from the papers which are online so if anybody has spare time in the library they might be able to fill in some gaps from the papers which are on film there.  Thank you!

A link to this blog about William Henry MASON & Amy Emily PORTER and their family certificates was posted to our Facebook Group. It is such an amazing story about a find of old certificates relating to this Weston and Uphill family that I believe you may be interested in it.

Gnr John EDDINGTON RA & Gnr Patrick O'NEILL RA
published by Lorna Gibson on Wed, 17/04/2019 - 22:43

Found in our loft in South Road WsM were two WW2 metal name tags. 1587512 Gnr EDDINGTON J and 1594405 Gnr O'NEILL P. I have found basic records and both were in the Royal Artillery, attestation 1940. It states that John EDDINGTON died in 1953 but I have not found a record.

I wonder if either of these men came from a local family. It would be good to be able to return the tags.
