CommentsMiss Florrie Perry published by - 8 years 17 days ago. | | Dear Dave
Thank you so much for offering to help solve this mystery. Last year for my Cousin Roy's 70th birthday, I thought I would try to trace his Father Ernest's side of the family. I knew of his Mothers side, as we share that line, but his Dad's would have been very interesting. This is where things started to unfold for the worst. I looked on FreeBMD and could not see his birth. I then contacted two Councils in Nottingham, his given place of birth and they have never heard of him either. I then tried to search for his Father Albert Bown Perry, using his full name as given on Ernest's wedding certificate, but he too could not be found.
I felt awful telling Roy that it looks like his Father lied about his d.o.b. We thought maybe he did this to get into the RAF. But if he did, surely we should be able to find him at a later date in Nottingham, but there's nothing. I have seen his papers in the RAF, he had a very important role and was commended for it. Not happy to give up there, I changed shift and this is what brings me to WSM.
Ernest we know had a sister Florrie, as Roy visited her a few times in WSM before loosing touch with her. Her letters stopped coming about 15 years ago, so he assumed she had died. She never married and from what she told him, Ernest was her only other sibling, slightly older than her. She was a cleaner and thought how funny it was that in this Care Home was another lady with the same name, this is how I know there is two of them. I could not trace Florrie in Nottingham either. Our big question was, why did Florrie who had never married end up in WSM? Ernest married in Nottingham but went on to live in Northfleet, where my family comes from. Florrie's address was;
Miss Florrie Perry
43 Alexandra House
Lonsdale Avenue
WSM
Florrie never wrote her postcode on any of her letters and from what Roy said about when he met her, she seemed to be a little bit backward. I have answers for your questions as follows.
1. We believe she was born Florence, but known as Florrie or Flo Perry.
2. Nottingham.
3. Roy visited the Care Home where she worked looking for her and found her there. He was actually taken to another Florrie Perry in a bed at first, but it was the cleaner also called Florrie, he is related to and saw her in her uniform.
4. We are assuming she is dead as the letters stopped coming on a regular basis, that was 15 years ago.
5. HIS FULL NAME : Ernest William Perry
6. 19/10/1918, 5 St Ann's Hill Road, Nottingham. This is the address Ernest gave to the RAF and we have seen this on his entry papers. I will have to come back with the date as my cousin is staying with me at the moment, not going back home until Monday.
7. He married Violet May Ring, in Nottingham on 6th June 1945. But went on to live in Northfleet with the rest of our family. Violet and my Mother are sisters.
8. Ernest was my Uncle, my Mothers - Sisters Husband.
9. He died Q2 1960 age 41 under district Dartford 5b page 361
10. No other siblings we are aware of.
Thank you for any help in getting to the bottom of this mystery Dave. Roy has serious health conditions and if I can sort this before he gets to ill, it would mean so much to me.

Miss Florrie PERRY published by daveerasmus - 8 years 19 days ago. | | Hi. I don't know the lady but I'm intrigued by your enquiry and would like to try to help, if I can.
As a starter can you provide any additional information eg
1. What was Florrie's full name?
2. Have you any idea where she was born?
3. How do you know that she worked in a Care Home in Weston?
4. Do you know if she was living in Weston when she died?
5. What was Ernest's full name?
6. What date and place of birth did he give when he joined the RAF? And what was his enlistment date?
7. Did Ernest marry? If so, do you know when, where and to whom?
8. How exactly are you related to Ernest? You say he was your Uncle but can you be more specific, please?
9. Do you know when and where Ernest died?
10. Do you know if Florrie and Ernest had any other siblings? If so, what do you know about them?

Miss Florrie Perry published by - 8 years 19 days ago. | | If anyone knows of this lady, who worked as a cleaner in a care home in WSM between 1970-1980.
There was a resident in the home with the same name.
Florrie had a brother called Ernest who was in the RAF.
Ernest was my Uncle.
I am desperate to find Florries date of death, to determine her date of birth. I need to order her birth certificate to confirm her parents, as Ernest gave a false date of birth rendering me unable to confirm his parents.
I have a picture of Ernest, if anyone should see a resemblance.
Florrie never married or had children. | |
Knowles Yatton & Kingston Seymour published by - 8 years 20 days ago. | | Thanks for your help. I was very tempted to agree that JAMES KNOWLES who married MARY BROOKMAN was the same person but I have doubts. However may problem is that I have seen no Kingston Seymour records prior to 1728 and I have records of too many JAMES KNOWLES at Kingston Seymour between 1728 and 1743 to be able to properly match them up.
The baptisms you mention fall between Sept 1729 and November 1734. Two of those children died. Each of those records state that parents are JAMES & MARY KNOWLES. So who is the JAMES KNOWLES who was buried 24 May 1734 - 2 days before MARY KNOWLES, daughter of JAMES and MARY KNOWLES and 6 months before ELIZABETH KNOWLES was baptised ? 1734 was obviously an eventful year for the KNOWLES family because in February 1734/35 HANNAH daughter of wid. KNOWLES was buried. The only HANNAH KNOWLES I have record of was the first child of JAMES & MARY KNOWLES born 1729 so does that mean that MARY was a widow ? But that does not make sense as the only JAMES KNOWLES recorded as buried prior to Feb 1734/35 is the one of May 1734 ! The widow MARY KNOWLES was buried 9 January 1742/43.
But there is another JAMES KNOWLES who was married to an ELIZABETH as the burial record for ELIZABETH KNOWLES of 19 August 1742 states "wife of JAMES KNOWLES". Other than this record I have no further information on this couple.
To add to my problem there are yet two more JAMES KNOWLES - the burial records show a burial of JAMES KNOWLES son of JAMES KNOWLES of Cleve (is that short for Clevedon or Cleeve near Yatton ?) buried on 15 Aug 1742. Kingston Seymour implies that they have a connection to that parish.
I clearly need more information and a trip to Taunton appears necessary to see records prior to 1729.
Thanks again.
Adrian

Research Aids and Transcriptions published by Pat Hase - 8 years 21 days ago. | | We must have members other than myself who also belong to the Somerset & Dorset FHS but our members often seem shy of answering queries! The Somerset & Dorset FHS have in the past published transcriptions of individual parishes but not, as far as I know, a total survey of the two counties. They do have a facebook page which is fairly active and members do answer queries on that.
For your Somerset parishes outside of North Somerset I would suggest FreeREG (for transcriptions) and Ancestry (for images of Somerset Parish Records). You could also try a query on this Research Forum - you never know who might read it and even come up with a suggestion for you!

Research Aids and Transcriptions published by - 8 years 21 days ago. | | Many thanks, Peter, for the information concerning Sussex FHS - no one from Weston-super-Mare FHS seems to belong to Somerset & Dorset FHS as well! My ancestors may have strayed outside the W-s-M perameters in earlier generations so I am interested to know if Somerset & Dorset FHS offer such comprehensive aids as W-s-M.
