DR JOHN RYE

I was very interested to read this article as Dr John Rye was the brother of my greatgreat grandmother AnnRye who married Henry Barnett. They lived in the house Cobrey at Walford in Herefordshire. Henry moved to Bath after he returned from service in India with the Hon East India Company. It was here he met Ann.

To answer your last question first he was buried on the 3rd July 1886 in Weston Cemetery Plot Number Tc 1489.  There is no memorial on the grave.

I think that the fact that he was entered as "Unmarried" on the 1881 census may well have been an error on the part of the ennumerator who simply assumed that any grandson living with his grandmother would be single!

Not sure about the desertion from the Grenadier Guards.  Where did you find that?

71 Meadow Street

In 1911 William and Rosina Woolmington and their two daughters were at 71. He was described as a stationer and newsagent.

By 1939 the shop was run by Mary Stocker (widow) and her son Mervyn. It was now classed as a newsagent and tobacconist dealer.

Photo from Bill Caple - Meadow Street pictured decorated for the Coronation of King George 5th and Queen Mary in 1911.

According to the 1911 Census - John YOUNG, a greengrocer was at No 69.  The H. HARDING & SON (behind the lamp post) at No 67 was a Chimney Sweep and George LONGLEY at No 59 was a Draper.  You are quite correct in stating that the history of Meadow Street reflects the changing pattern of life.
