Elizabeth READ/REED & Thomas GALLOP
published by Pat Hase - 8 years 7 months 25 days ago.

You are absolutely right - I should have written Winford for Elizabeth's baptism not Wrington.  I have corrected the comment in case anyone reads it in the future.

I have not researched the GALLOP family but I see that there is a PCC will for a Thomas GALLOP, a carpenter, of Winford dated 1825 but which did not receive probate until 1834.  In it he describes his wife Martha and his sister Elizabeth Hughes WILKINS. An Elizabeth Hughes GALLOP was baptised at Wrington in 1775 d/o Richard & Rachel. It also looks as if this Thomas GALLOP married Martha COOK at St James in Bristol 26th Nov 1814.

In the original query it was stated that - " William's father was Thomas who was married to Elizabeth Badman. His father was Richard Gallop who was married to Rachel Hughes in 1774 at Wrington."

So the Thomas who is still alive in 1851 and says he was born in Nempnett can't be the son of Richard & Rachel.   I'd be interested in your comments.

Elizabeth BADMAN later GALLOP

I note that a Mary BADMAN was christened at Burrington on the 28th Feb 1808 d/o Robert & Elizabeth BADMAN.  There is a marriage - see familysearch - of a Robert BADMAN to an Elizabeth REED on the 24th Aug 1807 at St James Bristol (not uncommon for people to go to Bristol to get married (especially if bride is already pregnant!).

Can't immediately see death or burial of Robert BADMAN but an Elizabeth READ (note spelling) was baptised at Winford in 1783 who just might be considered possible. No proof here but might be worth further investigation.

Thanks very much for those leads. I agree that ELIZABETH REED appears a good candidate and the baptism at nearby Burrington in 1808 certainly implies that ROBERT BADMAN could be the deceased husband. What is puzzling is I can trace the burial of neither ROBERT BADMAN nor ELIZABETH GALLOP. I need to visit the archives in Bristol as I suspect that the city will provide a number of answers to missing marriages.

If it is the lady born Winford (you stated Wrington but I think you meant Winford) then the reference to THOMAS GALLOP being born Nempnett Thrubwell begins to look possible, despite not baptism record showing up there. In fact I cannot find a suitable THOMAS anywhere in the area. I have found a number of baptims around the correct date but I think that I have traced what happened to the others.

By the way I think that THOMAS GALLOP & ELIZABETH had two other children - JANE and GEORGE baptised in Blagdon in 1813 and 1815 respectively. Those baptisms would fill the gap between the marriage in 1811 and the first recorded baptism at Churchill.

This barnch is not actually one of my lines and I have not yet found a link to my family group at Yatton.

A Robert GALLOP was baptised in Churchill on 29 May 1786 to parents James and Sarah. William GALLOP was baptised the same day.

I would be interested to know date of your slideshow - I have relatives buried in the churchyard - also relatives farmed in the village - Shiplate - Cook/Frost are some of the names. Also interested in your 1st show about Bleadon. Best wishes

Thanks, Adrian. You make a very fair point and I entirely accept that the matter is not free from doubt. However, I would add (in a spirit of playing devil's advocate):

1. It is entirely possible that Thomas GALLOP stopped being a carpenter some time between 1803 and 1811.

2. I'm not sure there is any evidence that Thomas and Elizabeth raised their family in Churchill. As far as I have established (and I repeat that I have not researched them in depth) the only thing we know is that they baptised their son, William, there.

I wonder if Elizabeth BADMAN holds the key? If we knew who her first husband was and what her maiden name was it might offer a clue as to what (if any) connection she had to Churchill. I don't have that information. Do you?
