Rosina Delilah James

Thank you very much for your help. James was her married name and I do not have her maiden name, as yet but there is the suggestion it could be Hollier as a woman named Mary Hollier is name in the household of Rosina in the 1911 England Census and her age suggests she could be a parent. In the 1901 England Census, Saltley was given as the Town's name, County: Warwickshire, Civil Parish: Aston. My father-in-law, who would be her grandson, has said the family moved to Weston-super-Mare after living in Cheddar Somerset. I'm new to researching family history so any help would be very much appreciated. Thanks again! Karen

I cannot find her in the Weston-super-Mare Cemetery.  Although her death was registered in the Weston District that did cover a fairly large area. The parishes included in that District can be seen here so you can see it would be helpful to have a copy of her death certificate to narrow down the search.

I am puzzled by your mention of "Saltley" - I'm not sure what that refers to - there is no town of Saltley in Somerset - where did you find this?    Was JAMES her married name?

George THORNE Olympic Golfer 1900
published by Pat Hase - 9 years 9 months 21 days ago.

Thank you - that helps. This afternoon Dave Tyler found an obit to the one who died in 1943 but no mention of Golf! He traced his wife as well - but still no mention of Golf. There are several books about Weston Golf Club in the Library but again no mention of George THORNE. One of our members suggested that even if he lived in Weston perhaps he played at a course outside of Weston - Burnham & Berrow was suggested or even further afield.

Independent Chapel, High Street, Weston-super-Mare

High Street 1856

This drawing of the High Street is dated about 1858 and shows the position of the Independent Church with a spire.  You can also see a front view of this chapel included in this article from the Weston Mercury  about churches in Weston.  The church was superseded by the Congregational Church (now URC) in Waterloo Street in 1876 and I'm told that the spire was incorporated into Banwell Abbey, whilst the rest of the building was used by an ironmonger - Felix Thomas - before it was taken over by Woolworths.

The information I have is, built c1830, rebuilt with spire 1858 at a cost of £2300, the new chapel could seat 500 people it closed in the mid 1870s.
