Getting Started with the GILL Family
published by Pat Hase - 11 years 4 months 19 days ago.

You already have a great deal of information and should be able to make great strides very quickly.  On our web site under the Main Menu on the left hand side of the home page is a section called Help and Advice.  If you click on that you will find that the second item is Family History for Beginners which contains some general advice for anyone starting their research.

One of the Free Sites available to search the Indexes for Births, Marriages and Deaths from 1837 is FreeBMD.  If you haven't already done so - try this site - start by looking for your own birth and then the births and marriage of your parents and then the births and marriage of your grandparents and so on.  From 1912 on the index for Births the mother's maiden name is also given.  If you have any difficult you would be very welcome to come into the Library in Weston any Saturday afternoon when we would be able to help you.

You mentioned the names of your GILL Grandparents.  I think have found their burials in Weston Cemetery.

The inscription on the grave reads - Plot V 235, In loving memory of a beloved Husband and Father WILLIAM HENRY GILL (BILL) who passed away 1st January 1973 aged 50 years.  His life a beautiful memory his absence a silent grief. In the same grave is Vera Marjorie GILL who died 17th Aug 2005 and was buried on the 26th Aug 2005, aged 78.

From that inscription you should be able to find the registration of their births - Bill GILL (who was William H H GILL) in 1922. and Vera in about 1927.  If you look for their marriage I think you will find that Vera's maiden name was FISHER.

You can then try the same with the RICHARDS and HAYDEN families.  Good Luck with this - Let us know how you are getting on.

Hi Ann,

I am no expert but in my experience the naming of children before the 1800's did reflect on the parent's names but after the 1800's this culture seemed to change and new names were used that were not family related, so Edward might have been the first time it was used.

I am glad I was of some help and I wish you luck in your research.

If you need any further help just post a message.

Sarah HOUSE
published by AnnieD - 11 years 4 months 20 days ago.

Hi Alun,

I am flabbergasted with how quickly you found Sarah House baptism, well done and thank you.  Sarah of Congresbury seems like the correct one as her age fits perfectly.  Now I am wondering, whom Charles Brown, Sarahs' son, named his first born son after, maybe a friend or maybe Sarahs' unknown father.  Charles named his first son Edward Brown, this name did not occur in his wifes family line at all.  Thank you for you stirling efforts, very much appreciated Alun.

George BROWN and Sarah HOUSE marriage
published by AnnieD - 11 years 4 months 20 days ago.

Dear Alun,

My oh my! you are very quick in locating George and Sarah Browns' marriage, thank you.  I too, had found this marriage earlier, however the Wyke St Lawrence parish, through me a bit.  I did not know whether this was the correct George or not.  I see from the parish map on the back of 'Buckets & Spades' journal, that both Worle and Wick St Lawrence parishes are adjacent to Banwell and Hewish parishes.  So they are most likely the correct couple, also the time frame fits.  Thank you very much for confirming my suspicions about this marriage for me Alun.

I suspect that Sarah would have come from one of the nearby parishes, Sarah died in 1816 at the age of 41 yrs, therefore born about 1775.

Hi Ann,

I have found two Sarah HOUSE's; One was baptised in Yatton on the 16 November 1760 to Anthony & Mary HOUSE and the other Sarah HOUSE was baptised in Congresbury on the 11 December 1774 to a Single Mum called Ann HOUSE.

I am inclined to believe that your Sarah HOUSE was from Congresbury born of a single Mother.because her birth is nearer to George BROWN's own birth, plus there is a Congresbury connection, but we cannot rule out other Sarah HOUSE births either, so more research is needed.

Without their ages upon burial it will be difficult to ascertain which is the right one, the only way is to find other Sarah HOUSE baptism's and eliminate them.
