Sorry, the reference to the 1951 census should have said the 1851 census

Sorry, no I couldn't find a burial. Why not contact the Nursing home where he was living at the time of his death (if it still exists!). They might have information which they are prepared to divulvge.

Following on from what David has found - as the date of death is given in the Probate as 8th May 1965 - it might be that there was an announcement in a local paper.  If you email the North Somerset Studies Library they may be able to help you if you quote the date.

I noticed that information about the death of his sister Petronella was published in the Western Daily Press (included in the British Newspaper Archive) on the 14th July 1942 but the archive only goes to 1950.  However, I believe there are copies of the Western Daily Press which can be seen in Bristol Reference Library on film - can anyone confirm this please?

It might be that information about what he intended for his funeral was included in his will - or might he have been buried with his wife Ada, who died in 1937 but I don't know where she was buried either!

Many many thanks Pat and Roy for your help with this J. Banwell image.

I can send your info to help my Coles family contact.

Now I must do some research to see if there is a family connection.!

It maybe just that it was such an unusual photo that his relative just hung on to it?

Again many many thanks

John Rigarlsford.

Thank you so much for this information. Do you happen to have anything else on him? Do you know if he was buried? and where?

J BANWELL of Weston-super-Mare
published by Pat Hase - 11 years 5 months 10 days ago.

According to numerous newspaper entries a J BANWELL of Weston-super-Mare was a prolific  winner of Pigeon Shooting Competions and another (it may be the same man) won trophies for athletics at the same time (late 19th early 20th century).

Got it! The Gloucester Journal - Saturday 06 January 1912 has this report - "The death is announced of Mr. John Banwell, of Weston-super-Mare, a well-known sportsman. He was an expert pigeon shot, and had been a successful athlete. His collection of prizes numbered nearly 500."

I believe he was the Landlord of  "The Swan" in Regent Street. However on the 1911 census he is listed as totally blind for the last 2 years.
