Marshall Family

Thank you all so much! Yes this is it. I had the list of Sarah Marshalls who died in Victoria but couldn't work out which one it was. The death notice in the Darling Downs Gazette nails it down and would have been placed by Eliza, my 2g grandmother. I think she was known as Elie so many people thought her name was Ellen. Perhaps this explains why her sister Ellen became Helene. My 2nd cousin asked me to research this as he is doing his X genome history - following his maternal genetic history. Coincidentally his mother's maiden name is Bennett. Can we go back any further? Do you have any records that might unearth Sarah Bennett's maiden name and genealogy?

MARSHALL leads to follow.

As a further shot in the dark (or, in this case a volley in the dark!), thanks to the great work of the Society, I could look at the baptism records for Worle and find several female Bennetts baptised in Worle between 1811 and 1818:-

13-Jan-1811 Betsy
08-Aug-1813 Phyllis
10-Apr-1816 Hannah
05-Apr-1818 Phebe (aged 2 years)
22-Nov-1818 Harriet (aged 18 months)

From my experience, it is certainly not unknown to discover that a child with a given (i.e. baptised) name was known by his or her family by a different name, which got used later on in a general way, so anyone of these could be a candidate.

Bennett is not at all an uncommon name in Worle around that time.

Bristol Hotel and the STALLARD family
published by Pat Hase - 11 years 5 months 19 days ago.

There is a collection of local photographs in the Library which may contain one.

There are some plans in the Somerset Heritage Centre for alterations to the Bristol Hotel in the 1930s

DBwsm/24/1/7441 Plan of alterations to The Bristol Hotel, corner of Locking Road and George Street. 1939
DBwsm/24/5/68 Plans of alterations to Bristol Hotel, Locking Road. 1939-1949

You could ask the North Somerset Archivist to bring them to Weston Libary when next she comes if you wanted to see them.

In 1911 a William STALLARD was the Licenced Victualler there and he seems to have remained there for several yars - he was certainly there in 1923.  Perhaps someone researching the STALLARD family might be able to help you.

One way of finding the mother's maiden name would be to purchase a birth certificate for George MARSHALL who was just 2 months on the 1841 census (taken in June 1841)

Births Jun 1841
MARSHALL  George    Axbridge  10 285

Any of the children born after 1837 would serve just as well. See the official Certificate Ordering Service for more details and how to order online.

A shot in the dark - There is a marriage in Bristol on the 24th June 1833 at St Michael's Church Bristol of a John MARSHALL and a Sarah BENNETT. - From the CD of marriages available from Bristol & Avon FHS. See here for more details of what can be obtained from that Society. Many marriages of couples from north Somerset.took place in Bristol .
