CommentsCornelius HANCOCK & Jane HANCOCK nee TOWGOOD [TOOGOOD?] published by Pat Hase - 11 years 8 months 5 days ago. | | In 1801 there was only one church in Weston-super-Mare - St John the Baptist, the original Parish Church, so that should be the first place to look for a burial. How do you know they was buried in Weston?
Where did you find the date for Jane's burial? According to our transcription and the NBI there is a burial of a Sarah HANCOCK (widow) 14 March 1801 but no Jane HANCOCK
I expect that you know that their son, also a Cornelius HANCOCK, was one of the Weston Worthies - a series of paintings of Weston residents of the 19th Century - He was born in Banwell and is buried in St John's Churchyard, Weston-super-Mare, aged 92 in 1855.
There is, I believe, an extensive obit to him in one of the Weston newspapers which can be viewed in Weston Library.
It might be helpful to look at the Overseers' Accounts for Weston-super-Mare to see whether Cornelius HANCOCK senior was listed as a rate payer of the parish and if so when he disappears from the list.
Although there are several family trees posted online I haven't found the sources for the information they contain and some of them contradict each other. Some confuse South Brent in Devon with South Brent (Brent Knoll) in Somerset - the possible birthplace of Cornelius HANCOCK senior. When he marries the register entry states that he was from Berrow (but that's not far from Brent Knoll and he could have been living there).
Perhaps someone else can suggest when and where Cornelius & Jane HANCOCK might have been buried.

DEMACK published by Pat Hase - 11 years 8 months 15 days ago. | | Have had this email from Mike DEMACK
"Have been exploring the family name, DEMACK, for some years and accumulated much from Ancestry.Co.uk. The name is very unusal and I gather may come from Mediteranean area originally - no proof - there are many based in North West ( Manchester Preston and Chorley ).
I have tried to link the two groups with those in Weston etc unsuccessfully apart from a decline in agriculture and a move to the north west to secure work in the mills in the19th Century,
Please pass details on to anyone who may be interested."

Sperrin published by - 11 years 8 months 21 days ago. | | If you enter "James Stephenson" watchmaker into the search on NLA there is further information you may be interested in regarding a fire on his premises and also some court proceedings. Still nothing on his death however. Cheryl | |
Sperrin published by - 11 years 8 months 21 days ago. | | Just in case you don't already have this information, Millinda "Stephenson" married Alfred Shrapnell Bailes in 1870. The Bailes family were from Bendigo but the marriage took place at St Paul's, Melbourne. Millinda is described as the daughter of Mr James Stephenson, Elizabeth St, Melbourne. Millinda and Alfred Bailes had a daughter also named Millinda (Millinda Fanny) who died in 1897 aged 25. Her married name was Moog. Millinda Moog was buried at Bendigo. It appears that Millinda Moog's mother (Millinda senior) had died by then or very shortly after as there are memorial notices in 1900 and 1902 that only mention her father. Alfred Shrapnell Bailes was a Mayor at Sandhurst (now called Bendigo). In 1883 a son was born to Alfred and Millinda and I would presume this child is Rupert Leslie or Leslie Rupert who died in a train accident. Alfred was a journalist in Bendigo. Harriet Stephenson, wife of James, died in 1899, possibly in Bendigo. All of this information came from the NLA Trove site (Google "NLA Trove"). This website is the digitalisation of a huge number of Australian city and country newspapers. If you enter "Louise Minton" into the search engine you will find some very interesting articles relating to her life before her marriage to James although I suspect you have all the newspaper articles re this episode in her life. The other daughter appears to have married Salvador Alfred Case. By trawling through the NLA site (free) and being very "creative" with your search words, you may uncover more information. Another option would be to contact other descendants to see if they have local knowledge, that is presuming you have not done that already.
Good Luck, Cheryl, Warragul, Australia

Biscuit Factory in Weston-super-Mare published by Pat Hase - 11 years 8 months 21 days ago. | | Although no one has posted any information about this - the volunteers who help in the Library on Saturdays have been trying to come up with a solution. In spite of several enquiries no one knows of a Biscuit Factory. But there are two possible options
- As the family lived in Wooler Road they would have been very near the Cooperative Store which was in Baker Street on the corner of George Street - Perhaps they had broken biscuits?
- Brian Austin suggests that he might have been referring to The Star Coffee House which was on the corner of Alfred Street and Meadow Street. He believes this catered almost as a soup kitchen and might well have baked on the premises.
Any more ideas?
