Weston Tea Cup & Saucer
published by Bill Caple - 11 years 9 months 29 days ago.

As Dave Milner has said these cup & saucer's are made in Gemany as souvenirs of Weston in about 1900. As for value they can be found for sale on E-Bay anywhere between £1 - £20

Mayors of Weston
published by Pat Hase - 11 years 9 months 29 days ago.

As far as I understand it  - Weston did not have a Mayor until 1937 - the first Mayor of Weston-super-Mare was Henry BUTT.

Perhaps you are thinking of Town Commissioners.  Weston gained town status in 1842 with Town Commissioners elected.

Francis Hutchingson Synge

The first Chairman of the Commissioners was Francis Hutchinson SYNGE. It's possible that someone has a list of the Commissioners which would help you - are you looking for any name in particular?

Weston Tea Cup & Saucer

Thank you to David Milner who sent me these photos with the comment that :

"Most interested in seeing the mention of the cup and saucer as I have something similar in my possession. I have no real idea of the value, history, etc but this cup and saucer were purchased for a few pounds in a small antique shop in the High Street of Wickwar, South Glos about 12 years ago. As you will see, it is similar but different to the one in which you are interested and the legend on the base of the cup is 'made in Germany'; there is nothing on the base of the saucer. I believe that this is probably a piece of massed produced cheap pottery that was made as souvenirs for holiday makers and known as 'Lustre Ware'. Images attached. Should it turn out to be worth a fortune, you're on 10%!"
Can anyone else help before this turns into an Antiques Road Show or even Flog It!!

John MATTHEWS
published by Pat Hase - 11 years 10 months 17 days ago.

By chance a number of the society were in the Library yesterday and one of of members found the report of the Inquest of John MATTHEWS.  We will send a copy directly to you at your personal email address.   It includes a brief outline of his involvement with the Royal Potteries and in a separate item (in the next column) a mention of sympathy being expressed by the Town Commissioners.

There was also a brief entry under the DEATHS

MATTHEWS - June 22nd at Weston-super-Mate Mr John Matthews of Rowton, Beaconsfield Road in this town aged 67 years - the funeral will take place on Tuesday next at Whitehaven.

Sharon's booket appears to be out of print but you might be able to borrow a copy through inter Library Loan - it's worth a try.

Hi All i am still looking for the baptism of Issac Sayer around 1773. I found a brother John baptised in Weston Super Mare St Johns in 1775 but i have looked for  baptisms for Issac and his Father James in WSM,Weston Milton, Worle Kewstoke , Locking and Hutton and cannot find these anywhere.

Any ideas of  other areas they could possibly be from please.

Many Thanks

Pat,

My BEACHAMs lived in Yatton (GF Frank BEACHAM b: 1891Clevedon to parents Joseph BEACHAM 1863-1918 and Fanny RADFORD 1862-1906 back through generations to William BEACHAM born abt 1748 d: 1839 Yatton marr to Mary HAWKINS who brought up a family in Kingston Seymour in the 1780's - 1790's. A distant cousin, Charles Henry BEACHAM living Atlanta, Ga, USA (with whom I believe you have had past correspondence) has carried out extensive research into our family and is, like you, at a brick wall with William BEACHAM b abt 1748 above.

I am trying to assist Charles from a little closer in here in south Wales and he sends me on mini research forays now and again. One to Adelaide, South Australia for which I haven't claimed expenses yet! The Winscombe BEACHUMs are interesting and not too far removed from Yatton but cannot find a link. I particularly like the story of George "Cunning" BEACHAM buried 27 July 1788 in Winscombe Churchyard against his dying wishes and who apparently returned to haunt his widow Joan as related in Francis Knight's book "Heart of Mendip"published 1915.

Keith
