CommentsHave you seen this? - from a published by janetp - 12 years 18 days ago. | | Have you seen this? - from a Google search of Lancelot rogers.
"He has a good number of examples already. Here's mine about my great great great grandfather who lived in Somerset, England.
Rope maker Lancelot Rogers,
Didn't spend much time with old codgers,
Home in Backwell, he said, was the best,
Except when Evans and Nott disturb our rest.
Notes:One of Backwell's church bells has an inscription that may have been referred to in local jokes.
"Bilby and Boosh may come and see
What Evans and Nott have done by me 1758"
Backwell, [Somerset, England] by John Brain, History In Our Church Towers, Pennant Reprints #7, Nailsea and District Family History Society, 2002, 2005."
Also there is an entry for a Lancelot rogers in a poll book for Backwell, West town on Ancestry which gives him as a lessee of a house and garden.

lancelot rogers published by janetp - 12 years 18 days ago. | | Hi
Further scrutiny show that Lancelot (christened 18.4.1783) was the next son born to Thomas and Jemima after the first Lancelot was buried (assuming it was him) ie they had 2 Lancelots in a row.
Also, looking at their other children, Betty was the first at Backwell, christened 7.9.1770, then there was a Betty Rogers buried 22.6.1775 and then they had another girl, also christened Betty 9.7.1775.
Perhaps this other possible reuse of a Christian name supports the theory of Lancelot?

lancelot rogers published by janetp - 12 years 18 days ago. | | Hi again
Also am not related at all but somehow found this one interesting!
You now seem to have 2 possible baptisms! Is it possible that the first Lancelot died and then they used the name again, 10 years after the first birth? I have several cases of this reuse of Christian names in my tree - sounds unlucky to us but as it often happened, it may have been in memory of the first child.

Lancelot ROGERS published by Pat Hase - 12 years 18 days ago. | | Hi Debbie,
Of course you are right and that christening is also on our transcripts - I just didn't look far enough!!
I think the one I found in 1773 is probably the same Lancelot ROGERS who was buried in 1774 but of course parentage and age are not usually given in the Burial Registers. There was also a Lancelot ROGERS buried in 1763 - I wonder who he was?
A Thomas ROGERS married Jemima JENKINS in Backwell 8th May 1769
My ROGERS family come from Wedmore - my Thomas ROGERS had his banns called in Wedmore in 1759 and was married in Rodney Stoke, the home parish of his bride, and they later settled in Wedmore where he was buried in 1775 but I'm not sure where he was born.

Lancelot ROGERS published by DebbieD - 12 years 19 days ago. | | Hello Pat,
Also following this thread with interest although I don't think my ROGERS family are connected.
On FreeReg there is the baptism at Backwell 18 Apr 1783 of Lancelott son of Thomas and Jemima Rogers. Perhaps this is the one referred to?
