Aha .. In 1841 they were living at Regent cottage in Weston-super-Mare next to a school, the preceding locations are High street, Devonshire Inn, various cottage names, Vale, Hill, Ivy, Sea View, Weston Hill, then after more Regent cottages, Villa, Marine, Weston, then 6 and 7 East something, bvd ?, then Weston again. What would be the nearest Church ?

Familysearch has a transcription of his marriage to Mary Jane CHAPLIN on the 16th Dec 1888 at St Luke's Church, Bedminster, Bristol.

Familysearch is always a good place to look for transcriptions of Bristol records but the original entry of a marriage should have the occupations of the bride, groom and their fathers as well as where they said they were living at the time of their marriage and the names of witnesses.

On the 1871 census you will see that he and his parents are living with a John FRENCH

On FreeBMD you will find this marriage - also in Bristol

Marriages Mar 1862   (>99%)
Ball  John    Bristol  6a 49
Cade  Maria    Bristol  6a 49
French  Anne    Bristol  6a 49
Hewlett  William Henry    Bristol  6a 49

This suggests that John BALL's wife might have been an Anne FRENCH

Using Familysearch again you can find this marriage as well - John BALL married Ann FRENCH on the 26th Feb 1862 at St Nicholas Church, Bristol - It was not unusual for people living in North Somerset to go to Bristol to get married.

On the censuses Ann BALL née FRENCH is shown as being born in Congresbury in about 1840.  As Congresbury and Puxton are adjacent parishes it might be worth searching around that area for her birth.
