Wiliam BEARD - Banwell
published by Pat Hase - 12 years 7 months 18 days ago.

Have you been able to find a christening for the William BEARD who was born in 1805?

Have you discounted the christening in Banwell in 1802 of a William BEARD?  As you have his death date of 29th April 1871 it does look - from the 1871 census entry at least - that he might be the one married to a Betsy and whose birth date is given as 1802 on the census but perhaps this isn't the one you are looking for.   However, the Death Registration on FreeBMD for the June Qrt 1871 does give his age as 69

BEARD William  69  Axbridge    5c   404

The William BEARD who was so closely connected to the Banwell Bone Caves was born in 1772 and died in 1868 but it is possible that he might have been related - possibly a half brother to the father of your William BEARD.

I think all the clues are in the parish registers for Banwell which are online on this site.

Western Daily Press article
published by jdp147 - 12 years 7 months 18 days ago.

Hi Valerie,

I had a quick look on the British Newspaper Archive website and found an article from the Western Daily Press on 12th Feb 1903 that refers to William Andres and his wife Olive Andres - both aged 24 - charged with stealing provisions from the house where she worked as a cook in Clifton, Bristol (no.18 the Avenue, in the employ of Mr Walter John Crawhall). William was sent to prison for six weeks, but Olive escaped imprisonment because the judge felt she was under the influence of her husband. With this unusual surname I'd guess it's probably the right couple, especially as the article also says that she'd left work in August 1902 to be married, but returned soon after because her husband could not support her. (If you'd like me to transcribe the full article, I'm happy to do so - just let me know!)

On a related note, in my family tree I have a Charles Fear, a fly proprietor in Weston-super-Mare, marrying my great-great-grandfather's half-sister, Annie Dean, at Emmanuel on 5th October 1891. He was born c.1865 in Dewsberry and died in Weston on 23rd December 1904 (buried at Uphill) - was he any relation to Olive? Interesting that he has the same job as William's father ...

Fly proprietor

Well, a "fly" was a lightweight carriage.  The term eventually encompassed any one horse carriage such as a hansom.  So, he was probably the proprietor of a hansom cab or a fleet of them - in other words a taxi cab owner.  That's what I think, anyway.  Jenny

Hello Liz, yes you are correct about the marriage. Some information for you about myself. I was born in 1948 in Hendon N London. Stella is my mother, however I do not know if Stanley in my father. My Birth name was Toni Duckett( although I am a male) and adopted at about two weeks old.Stanley however died on Oct 19 2005 in Western-Super-mare, but to date I have been unable to find an obituary on him, any help with this would be fantastic as it may give us some information on Stella who was born in Headington,Oxfordshire in 1927.

As you live in the area I was wondering if you had access to phone book and could look for Stella. This is the closest I've gotten to either of them, with great anticipation I await your response.

Regards.....Gareth
