I was very interested to read about the Court cases in 1879 & 1882 and I agree with your view that William b.1881 was the Son of William b.1843 and Elizabeth Pagginton whom he married in 1891.

The case reported in the Western Daily Press on 18 January 1879 -  confirms the William had been married for 4 years. I therefore believe this relates to his marriage to Elizabeth Smith in 1874.

I have found another interesting article in the  Western Daily Press of 12 February 1903. This tells the case of William Andres 24 & Olive Andres 24 being charged with stealing a quantity of provisions. William pleaded guilty and was sentanced to 6 weeks imprisonment with hard labour. This makes William being born around 1879 so could this be William b.1881? I can't find any record of another William Andres being born in 1879.

I may have to obtain the marriage certificate of William & Olive to find out for sure.

Martha OFFER

Hi again, Richard. Now that my daughter's wedding is safely behind us and life is slowly beginning to return to normal, I am able to give my full attention to your extremely helpful message. Thank you again for being so prepared to help me with this particular brick wall.

What you have found is extremely encouraging. I think there is a strong probability that "my" Martha is the one baptised in Compton Bishop and I think that Edith is likely to be her sister.

I have found burial information for what appears to be their father John on findmypast. I was going to ask you where you found his will, but I've just found it in the National Archives! The Archives also include a reference to the discharge from service in 1802 of a John OFFER aged 26 born in Bath. That date neatly pre-dates "my" John's supposed marriage to Betty. And it looks like he was discharged on medical grounds which might explain an apparently early death in 1808. Supposition only at this stage, of course.

I don't suppose you have found a marriage for John OFFER and Betty have you, please?

William ANDRES
published by Pat Hase - 12 years 9 months 26 days ago.

Although not related to this fascinating and confusing family I have been looking at it to try to answer the query about the death of the William ANDRES who married Olive Amelia FEAR.  You are suggesting that the William ANDRES who was born in about 1882 was the one who married Olive.

In 1879 Elizabeth ANDRES (nee SMITH) was imprisoned for 6 months for cruelty to her step children and in July 1879 there was an announcement in the Western Daily Press that William ANDRES would not be responsible for any debts incurred by his wife Elizabeth.  She is missing from the 1881 census and I am not sure whether the Elizabeth who is with him in 1891 is the same Elizabeth.  I rather think that this Elizabeth was actually Elizabeth PAGINTON who was the mother of William, Albert & Emily PAGINTON who are with William ANDRES in 1891.

In 1882 William ANDRES and Elizabeth PAGGINTON were accused of abandoning an illegitimate child in the Workhouse.  It is possible that this child was the boy who was later known as William ANDRES junior.  He was registered as William PAGINTON in the Dec qrt 1881.  During the court case it was stated that William ANDRES was the father of the child and that Elizabeth PAGGINTON had been living with him for the past 15 months.

I'd be  interested in your comments!

Lilian Blanch GODDEN - Hillsborough House

In the Kelly's Directories for 1971 & 1974 Miss L B GODDEN is listed at 39, Hillsborough House.  So she must have arrived before 1971.  Although perhaps not strictly sheltered accommodation I think Hillsborough House, which was built in 1964 with 28 one-bedroom flats did have visiting support and a community alarm.

Hi

My 3 x Gt Grd Father is Isaac Andres and I believe William Andres b1843 is my 2nd Gt Grd Uncle. His Sister Rosina b.1855 is my 2 x Gt Grd Mother. I have been conducting some research and my findings are as follows:

William married Elizabeth Ward and had 5 children 1 of which was William b.1867. He married Sarah Ball and had 3 daughters. He died in 1944.

After Elizabeth Ward died in 1874 William (1843) married Elizabeth Smith (not sure of surname) in 1879 and had 3 further children including another William b.1882. This is confirmed in the 1891 census.

William (1882) I believe married Olive Fear. William (1882) died in 1951 in Bristol. I have found that the 1911 censuses have helped to clarify what is a very confusing tree.

I would be very interested to learn how you are related to William Andres (1843, 1867 or 1882).
