Hello, I'm a descendant of Jacob PARKHOUSE (c1749-1839) of Upottery and Sarah CLAPP.  Just wondered if there is a connection.

Pat you are once again a star! You may remember that you helped me at one of the advise sessions a couple of years ago with finding another of my gg grandmother Matilda JONES (Knight) in the Axbridge Workhouse and you have once again come up with the goods!! So in return, I have a couple of notes made by one of Betsy's daughters (Rose Ella) which lists all of her parents, grand parents, aunts and uncles ect with some dates too. This is where I got the date of Betsy's birth, but I'm sure that that could be wrong as these things often are! It also shows that Maria was married before. They should be in your mail box now!!

I agree with you that Betsy was the daughter of Richard & Maria PUDDY.  In my records I have her being christened 1st November 1840 at Woolavington.  In 2004 I purchased a CD from the Woolavington History Group which includes scanned images of the parish records of Woolavington. I think that Maria COLES was also christened at Woolavington 13th March 1820, the daughter of Charles & Elizabeth.

Richard & Maria were married in Woolavington 5th Nov 1838.  Both Richard and Maria made marks rather than signing their names and Richard's abode at the time of the marriage was said to be Mark.  His father was given as Robert PUDDY, Labourer.  Maria's father was confirmed as Charles COLES.

In transcripts for Mark I find that a Richard PUDDY was christened 11th Feb 1814 at Mark, the son of Robert & Joan PUDDY, Shopkeeper.  Incidentally he also had a sister called Rhoda.

Robert PUDDY had married Joan HOUSE in Mark 14th Dec 1805.  On censuses both Robert and Joan give Mark as their place of birth.  I think Joan HOUSE is probably the daughter of William & Mary HOUSE, christened 23rd Jan 1784.  I'm not so sure about Robert PUDDY - most likely he's the son of Richard & Hannah, christened in Mark 11th Oct 1782, but his age does not match.

Back in 1993 someone from Canada sent me the following report of an examination in the Somerset Archives which she had copied during a visit here the previous year.  "Joan wife of Robt Puddy of Mark 16 Feb 1818.  He was born in Mark and is now about 33 years old.  He went to Bristol and she went to Lower Easton as a washerwoman at 3/6 per room[?] Her husband took a  house in St Phillips, in Church Alley from Wm Phipps of 20 Dove St., Kingsdown, Bristol 1 yr at £1 per year.  Her husband was arrested and put in gaol so she went back to her mother in Mark. They have 5 children, Robt 9, Rhoda 8,Winifred 6, Rich 4 Drusilla 1yr"

I've no idea what Robert did to end up in gaol but presumably Joan took him back when he was released as they are together on censuses. I haven't linked him in to our family yet.... but give me time!

PUDDY connection.

Hi,

I have Betsy PUDDY (b. 2nd Nov 1840 in Woolavington d. 2nd Oct 1923 most likely in Burtle) in my tree, she is my gg grandmother. Her father was a Richard PUDDY (b. abt 1816) and mother was Maria COLES (b. abt 1821) but that is as far back as I have got along that line.

One point of interest is Betsy's sister Rhoda PUDDY (b. 14 Feb 1842 d.3 Oct 1918) who married a Gabriel NORRIS (b. 25 Sept 1844 d. 3 Feb 1933) in 1869. Less than 3 years later and they, with their young daughter, were on the SS Arragon, sailing out of Bristol for New York. I can track them as they moved around having children in New York state and California before settling down in Clackamas, Oregon. They are both buried in the Damascus Pioneer Cemetery, Clackamas County, Oregon, USA.
