Anna Maria HARSE
published by DebbieD - 13 years 2 months 9 days ago.

There is an Anna Maria HURST who arrived in Australia from London in 1869 aged 20.  I think this could be her but have found no trace of her marriage or death there so far.

Joseph and Hannah were in Newport in 1841.  A son Thomas drowned aged 7 in Nailsea in 1846.  His death was registered nearly a year later around the same time as his brother's (also Thomas) birth was registered in Nailsea.  Unfortunately there appear to be no newspaper reports of the drowning or inquest.  Joseph Snr and Thomas II died of spasmodic cholera in September & October 1849.  There is no evidence of where Hannah was between 1847 in Nailsea and 1851 in the Workhouse so perhaps Anna Maria was born elsewhere.

Although Anna Maria is the real mystery in this branch I would love to find out more about them all because Joseph born in 1839 was my 2x great grandfather.

Robert Hardcastle JOHNSTON 1818-1902
published by Pat Hase - 13 years 2 months 12 days ago.

According to the information on our CD of Weston Cemetery Robert Hardcastle JOHNSTON died 12th Sept 1901 (not 1902) but as you know the date it might be worth your while contacting Weston Library and asking for them to look in the local newspapers nearest that date to see if there was an obit.

The Somerset Heritage Centre might also have documents deposited with them which mention him.  Try their online catalogue.

I see he was at 3 Royal Terrace in 1901. The Gloucester Citizen of 5th May 1887 has an entry about the marriage of his daughter, Maria, and Robert is described as "of the Royal George Hotel, Birdlip".  In May 1888 the same newspaper reports the transfer the licence for the George at Birdlip from Robert to Edwin Shipway. On the 1891 census Robert is at the Falcon Hotel in Painswick so do you know when he came to Weston?   Was it the Dauncey family or the building which has links with your family?  Might it be his son who had the connection with the property in Claremont Crescent?

Norcot CLARKE

Notcot CLARK's burial is included in the transcripts of Butcombe Parish Registers which are available to members on this site.  He was buried 23rd Feb 1873, aged 65.  There is also a burial of an Elizabeth CLARK on the 5th Dec 1875, aged 72.

A Northcote[sic] CLARK married an Elizabeth SAGE 29th June 1828 at Barrow Gurney - Could this be the marriage of your ancestor?

Arthur COLES
published by Pat Hase - 13 years 2 months 14 days ago.

Have your tried Familysearch for a possible Arthur COLES? There is a christening of a Arthur COALS [sic] son of Will & Deborah at South Brent (Brent Knoll) on the 16th Jan 1726.  Probably a little early to be your Arthur COLES unless he was a widower when he married Betty.

I see that when your Arthur COLES got married one of the witnesses was a Richard COLES.  Presumably he was a relation - could be father, brother, uncle, cousin?

What were the names of Arthur & Betty's children? - sometimes these will include the names of grandparents.  I did notice that Betty's mother was possibly Anstance PRENTER and that Arthur and Betty had a daughter who died young with the same first name.

Anna Maria HARSE
published by Pat Hase - 13 years 2 months 15 days ago.

Following your research I would agree that it is very likely that the Pill born, Ann HARSE aged 11, who was in Hopkins Street in 1861 is most probably the Anna Maria HARSE who was in Axbridge Workhouse in 1851.  However, I cannot find birth registration for her - the nearest is an Anna Maria HARPER Sept qrt 1849 Bedminster Registration District - I agree that HARSE and HARPER are not exactly close but have you tried looking through the Easton in Gordano Parish Registers for a possible christening?

Coincidentally the William HARES who married Hannah HURST had a daughter, Selina, by his first marriage who married Henry HASE in 1846 so I had met up with Hannah before but although I had her son Joseph I hadn't picked up the other two children.  I had noted that on later censuses Joseph gave his birth place as Pill.

Regarding Anna Maria - you've got me curious now - I haven't been able to locate her after 1861 either! Perhaps someone else can?  Did she marry?  Did she die?  Did she emigrate?

WATTS/GARDINER Family Bristol
published by Pat Hase - 13 years 2 months 15 days ago.

There are some Boer War Records on Findmypast and Ancestry but be prepared to search with fewer first names or even initials and with variants of GARDINER.  One of the casualties (an F GARDINER) was with the Gloucester Regiment which might be a possibility. But this one was posted as missing in 1899 so perhaps Ethelinda was being optimistic for his safe return when she said she was married in 1901. She said she was a widow by 1911.

I think they were probably married in 1884 not 1864 but what occupation did he give when they married?  As Ethelinda and her children were resident in a Bristol Workhouse in 1891 possibly he had already enlisted by then - if not - where was he in 1891?
