Shop in Weston? - ll

Actually it seems to be on the non-pedestrianised bit of Southgate (marked on Google maps as St James' Parade) so you can see it in Google Streetview: (hope this link works)

Otherwise go to Google Streetview, find St James' Parade in Bath, find the Post Office and its 2 doors to the left, next to Toni & Guy....

There's little enough detail to be sure but the general layout looks similar, and the corbel things are visible in both pictures, as are what I guess are iron pillars in the angle of each window....

There is a Mark Parker, tobacconist, shown in various historical directories in business at 30 Southgate Street, Bath, between at least 1923 and 1935 which feels like the right era for this picture, judging from the gentleman's clothes.

No M. Parkers shown as hairdressers around this time anywhere in Somerset as far as I could find. Could this be it?

There's a very small picture of the present 30 Southgate here which looks like it might be.

Hab(b)erfield

Habberfields (and varients) appear in the passenger records leaving for the American States traced back to the C1600's and were caught up in the battles and wars which took place. Captain Habberfield is recorded in the Bristol records having 'jumped ship' from the British Navy in Australia to settle in New Zealand where he became one of the founder settlers. Records suggest his origins lay in Somerset. My Grand Mother related accounts handed down through generations that the family became dispersed owing to the 'great floods' which swamped the fields an undoubted referance to the Somerset levels which resulted. There were fierce differances of opinions with regard to religous beliefs. My Grand Mother's line greatly opposed to 'those Catholics' but her father was the Parish Clerk (Tedworth Wilts) and of the "Temperence Society" whereas the close relatives line "Andrew" father of John Kerle (who dropped a 'B') from Devon was involved in the wine trades with Portugal, and there is no doubt which wealth helped him on his way to Bristol where he became a successful Advocate and well known philanthropist - being without any heirs. John Kerl's widow later left a sizeable legacy to members of her household who cared for her in later life - after which they emigrated to New South Wales and where the resort of "Habberfield" was named in Lady Habberfield's memory. The family related futher accounts and of these that ancestors were involved in the Plymouth Bretheren movement. During an unrelated search at the Gloucestershire records office I came across records revealing lands passed to Edward Habberfield in Somerset (North Petherton) during the C14th period. Such revelations add some spice as well as interest to some of the more tedious tasks in finding onse ancestors ! Any interested party having further informations to exchange would be welcomed ! - meanwhile the research continues.
