I was wondering if John WHITTINGTON (1) (George's father) might be the only son of the Rev. John WHITTINGTON (2), rector of Cold Aston? John (1) married Mary OSBORNE on 1 May 1824 at Cold Aston. However, he died on 11 January 1837 (buried at Cold Aston on the 18 January), and Mary remarried a James HUFF at St Mary Redcliffe on 9 April 1841. So, I was wondering if this is where George got the idea he was born at Bristol? Crucially, this hangs on the fact that John (1) was a milliner/hatter - which I cannot prove. Finding George's baptism might help ... there are so many unanswered questions!

Thank you for mentioning the Cloves in Oranges - a modern form of Chris-tingle. See here for its origin.  I had forgotten the hours spent making paper lanterns and stringing them up. This video is an up-market and modernised version of the ones we made.
