Cardiff Arms
published by - 6 years 10 months 17 days ago.
I visited the Cardiff Arms many times between 1963 and 1964 as I was stationed at RAF Locking. Tommy Banwell was indeed working there and was a snappy dresser. His sister, Mrs Yates, was then the publican. I know this because I used to date Mrs Yates daughter, Janet Yates. Janet was 19 years old and a very attractive girl. Anyway she dumped me and we went our seperate ways. I returned to RAF Locking in 1965 for a 6-week course and Tommy, Mrs Yates and Janet were still there. I returned again in 1968 and the pub appeared derelict and I found out that Tommy had died. To my knowledge Tommy was never the publican.

Help! Sealey Mogg
published by hillfield53 - 6 years 11 months 5 days ago.

Oh if only I had a pound for every time I've shouted that! My gg grandmother was Harriet Sealey Mogg married to Emmanuel Field. When I first started researching this branch I thought Emmanuel had two wives as on their children's birth certs she was sometimes Harriet nee Sealey and sometimes Harriet nee Mogg. I am reading this on holiday but as soon as I get home I will contact you again and maybe we can share notes.

Yours in confusion

Heather

Brick walls
published by - 6 years 11 months 7 days ago.

Amazingly enough I broke down one of my brick walls by 'Googling' my ancestor's name.  I had literally spent years searching for my missing great great grandfather, Harry Cantrell. Family tradition said that Harry was an engine driver and was killed in a railway accident in Africa.  As Harry appeared on the 1881 census and his widow remarried in 1896, it gave me a window of 15 years.  There were not too many railways in Africa at that time and I read everything I could find with no success.  One day, on a whim, I put Harry's name into the search engine and came up with an obituary in an Australian newspaper.  It got better - Harry died in Tasmania, in 1932 leaving a wife and daughter.  His (2nd) marriage certificate helpfully gave his date of birth and named his parents, so I know I have the right man. The obituary did actually confirm that he had worked as a driver in South Africa.

I know I was lucky, but it is worth a try.

Elizabeth Capel 1763-1841 married John Twitt 1759-1832

Good afternoon I am wondering if you could enlighten me on the family history of my 6 x times removed Grandmother Elizabeth Capel of Norton Court Farmhouse, Lower Norton Lane, Kewstoke, North Somerset. John & Elizabeth are buried under the floor at St.Pauls Church Kewstoke & their is a lovely memorial inside the church to them. I know my Twitt family history but nothing of Capel family history. Elizabeth & John Twitt's Grandson Henry 1836-1896 emigrated to Australia 1852> Jane Pople also from Kewstoke followed him to Australia & they married in Victoria 1861. Jane & Henry had 5 children. We are now 4 generations of TWITT/POPLE's in Australia. I would be most appreciative of any information regarding my Capel family Kindest regards Jan Twitt-Grose 6 Snow Gum Court Strathdale, Victoria, Australia. janivg@bigpond.com mobile 0419392598
